Background

Taranaki Regional Council is developing a Regional Land Transport Plan (RLTP) in 2024. This strategic document will provide direction to land transport in the region and set out how the region proposes to invest to achieve those objectives.

At the heart of this is a need to change how we travel and reduce our reliance on cars. A shift to low emission transport options is essential to reduce carbon emissions and adapt to climate change. Rethinking how we travel and developing a network that reduces road crashes and makes it safe, convenient, and attractive to walk, cycle and take a bus for day-to-day trips is vital to making that change.

Community conversation

We heard from the Taranaki community in March to May 2023. This engagement asked people for feedback on four focus areas: road safety and speed management; long-term vision for transport in Taranaki; public transport (including buses and rail) and cycling, walking and active travel.

We then heard from the community again in September to October 2023. The district councils in Taranaki (New Plymouth District Council, Stratford District Council and South Taranaki District Council) sought feedback on their proposed speed limit changes, while Taranaki Regional Council sought feedback on the draft strategy, Better Travel Choices for Taranaki.

Consultation about the RLTP is now open until 16 March.
