Do you remember the Waitōtara flood in 2015? or do you have any photos of the flood in 2015?

We have been busy developing a flood mapping model along the Waitōtara River based on the June 2015 flood. We need your help and local knowledge to check if we have got it right. Once we can be sure the flood model is accurate, we can then start investigating how effective different nature-based solutions may be in the Waitōtara catchment to mitigate against future weather events.

We would love your help and local knowledge to see if we have got the flood model right. You can zoom in and click on the map to post a comment or a photo. Let us know how the modeled map compares to your experiences.

There are a few different types of nature-based solutions that could be implemented in the Waitōtara catchment to reduce the effects of flooding such as retirement or afforestation of steep slopes, channel management, reconnecting the flood plain and developing constructed wetlands.

What would you like to see done in the catchment? Or do you have further comments about flooding in Waitōtara?
